Illustrations - San Lorenzo Open-Air Market

The open-air market is a flamboyant aspect of the San Lorenzo neighborhood in Florence, Italy. It is colorful, full of sounds, smells, and temptation. It is only after perusing all the stalls and products, does a person notice the San Lorenzo church in the background. Though the church is rather drab externally, it is a significant building in the neighborhood because it houses, among many other things, the art work of Donatello, Michelangelo’s famous staircase leading to the library, and the church embodies the architectural genius of Brunelleschi. The market attractions, however, divert the passerby’s attention from the church. I hope to convey the market’s overwhelming qualities as well as the church’s triumph over the market once noticed.
